Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party (the mediator) meets with the parties to try and help them resolve their dispute and come to an agreement that it is in everyone’s best interest.  Each party has an opportunity to describe the issues, their concerns, their desires, and to provide information to the mediator, who then explores ideas for resolutions.  Parties either choose to voluntarily submit to mediation or are ordered to do so by the Court.  The parties can only be ordered to participate, the mediator does not have the authority to make any decisions for the parties, and cannot force an agreement on them.
